Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
Issued during years that would see teams including the Philadelphia Flyers, Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils, Tampa Bay Lightning, Carolina Hurricanes and Anaheim Ducks win Stanley Cup championships, offered here is this collection of twelve (12) press pins issued to famed sports journalist Frank Brown for Stanley Cup Playoffs held between 1975 and 2007. Including examples from 1975, 1977, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007, the pins all present in the shape of the Stanley Cup with the NHL's shield emblem over the middle while the year is seen below and either "News" or "PHWA" below that. With the four (4) earliest pins all slightly larger than 2" in size, the others all measure out to slightly bigger than 1 1/4" top-to-bottom for their efforts. All in overall excellent condition, with the 1977 pin virtually a brand new unissued example, the others all show just light wear from age/use including light tarnishing and surface scratches. Stamped "Sterling" on the back of the 1975 and 1977 pins, all include their original fasteners except for the pin from 1975. All hailing directly from Brown's personal collection and also including pinback buttons/passes from both the 1974 and 1976 Playoffs that are in overall excellent condition as well, the group is accompanied by a Classic Auctions LOA.
Publishing his first paid hockey article in a New York Rangers game program in 1970 that earned him a total of fifty ($50) dollars, from there, Frank Brown began his career as a journalist for The Associated Press, typically covering the Montreal Canadiens. Under the leadership of Stan Fischler, Brown stated he learned the "courage of my convictions" after being handed Gordie Howe's phone number. Moving on to the New York Daily News in 1980, where he would remain until 1998, when he joined the National Hockey League as a communication executive, a position he would hold with the league until his retirement in 2018. He was awarded the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2019.
