Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
With the first official playing of the NHL's annual All-Star Game happening in 1947, the mid-season classic pitting the best of the best in the National Hockey League against each other remains a fan favorite even after all these years. Offered here, we present this collection of seven (7) NHL All-Star Game press pins issued to journalist Frank Brown while covering the event. Including a quartet from the 1970s that are done up in the shape of a skate and overall fairly large at roughly 2" top-to-bottom, each displays the NHL's shield emblem as well as "All-Star Game", the host city and the date it was played on. Including examples from 1975 to 1978 in this style, each has had white tape wrapped around their points on the reverse while the pins from 1976, 1977 and 1978 are all stamped "Sterling Silver" over their reverses. Also including smaller pins from the 1979 NHL Challenge Cup, 1980 NHL All-Star Game and 1986 NHL All-Star Game, all the pins included are generally in a condition range of good to excellent and show just some light surface/handling wear from use and age that is worth mentioning for accuracy. Hailing directly from Brown's personal collection, a Classic Auctions LOA will accompany the lot.
Publishing his first paid hockey article in a New York Rangers game program in 1970 that earned him a total of fifty ($50) dollars, from there, Frank Brown began his career as a journalist for The Associated Press, typically covering the Montreal Canadiens. Under the leadership of Stan Fischler, Brown stated he learned the "courage of my convictions" after being handed Gordie Howe's phone number. Moving on to the New York Daily News in 1980, where he would remain until 1998, when he joined the National Hockey League as a communication executive, a position he would hold with the league until his retirement in 2018. He was awarded the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2019.
