Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
Publishing his first paid hockey article in a New York Rangers game program in 1970 that earned him a total of fifty ($50) dollars, from there, Frank Brown began his career as a journalist for The Associated Press, typically covering the Montreal Canadiens. Under the leadership of Stan Fischler, Brown stated he learned the "courage of my convictions" after being handed Gordie Howe's phone number. Moving on to the New York Daily News in 1980, where he would remain until 1998, when he joined the National Hockey League as a communication executive, a position he would hold with the league until his retirement in 2018. Awarded the 2019 Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award by the Hockey Hall of Fame, offered here from his personal collection, we present this grouping of various media passes and accreditations used by Brown that were issued by organizations such as the NHL, PWHA, New Jersey Devils and others. Found in a variety of styles and sizes with numerous teams as well as the National Hockey League as a whole represented, notable passes present include a group of fourteen (14) NHL media passes that includes a metal 1991-92 75th anniversary of the league example plus others in the style of a credit card with all displaying Brown's name as well as "New York Daily News" in many cases. Additionally, all display league imagery such as the NHL shield and in many cases are dated, with the earliest example hailing from 1991-92 and the most recent being from 2009-10. Also including twenty-seven (27) of Brown's PHWA passes that date from 1973-74 up to 2014-15, many have been signed by him with a ballpoint pen ink signature while also displaying the season that they are from and displaying his association member number. Additionally, a couple also display "Lifetime Member" designations as well. With the rest of the notable items including NHL Annual Meeting passes from 1976 and 1978 that both display images of Brown, various minor league and junior hockey passes are also included, totaling out to eleven (11), the last of the notable items is a media credential from the night Mario Lemieux returned to the NHL on December 27th, 2000. With the rest of the lot consisting of numerous tickets and passes from various teams throughout the National Hockey League that are found in a variety of styles and mostly retaining original laces/lanyards, the items are all found to be in an overall good condition or better while showing handling wear and in some cases creases or dirtiness.
