Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
Publishing his first paid hockey article in a New York Rangers game program in 1970 that earned him a total of fifty ($50) dollars, from there, Frank Brown began his career as a journalist for The Associated Press, typically covering the Montreal Canadiens. Under the leadership of Stan Fischler, Brown stated he learned the "courage of my convictions" after being handed Gordie Howe's phone number. Moving on to the New York Daily News in 1980, where he would remain until 1998, when he joined the National Hockey League as a communication executive, a position he would hold with the league until his retirement in 2018. Awarded the 2019 Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award by the Hockey Hall of Fame, offered here from his personal collection, we offer this grouping of various international hockey items including media passes and tickets from events such as the Canada Cup, World Cup of Hockey, NHL Challenge Cup, Olympic Games, IIHF World Junior Championships, 1974 Canada-Russia Series and NHL Global Series. Starting with a group of older items that includes ticket stubs from all three (3) games of the NHL Challenge Cup in 1979 that was won by the Soviet Union against a squad of National Hockey League all-stars, accompanying the desirable ticket stubs is Brown's media pass and media pinback button (missing the pin/clasp on the reverse) with everything remaining in overall good condition or better though the ticket stubs do show toning as well as small creases plus edge/corner wear to all three (3) from handling. With the rest of the older relics including Brown's press/media badges from events such as the 1974 Canada-Russia Series, 1976 Canada Cup and 1981 Canada Cup, the badge from 1981 is joined by passes from games held on September 9th, 11th and 13th (final) at the Montreal Forum. For the rest of the lot, including numerous press passes/media accreditations of various styles and sizes with many retaining their original lanyards/laces and displaying headshot images of Brown on them, joining them is a grouping of tickets from various Olympic Games' that includes specimens from 2002, 2010 and 2014 as well as the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. With notable games among the group being the men's semi-final games in 2002, men's bronze medal game in 2002, men's bronze and gold medal games in 2010 and men's bronze and gold medal games in 2014, majority of the passes and tickets present and accounted for are found to be in good to excellent condition overall, exhibiting light handling wear for their efforts while a couple show heavier wear that is worth noting for accuracy, most notably on the example from the bronze medal game in 2010. Finished off with programs from the NHL's International Series of 1977-78 and the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, the lot will come accompanied by a Classic Auctions LOA.
