Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
From the dawning of the National Hockey League's expansion era that began in 1967, offered here is this collection of thirty-one (31) Art Ross/Converse National Hockey League game pucks that date from the period of 1968 to 1977 which all hail from the personal collection of legendary journalist Frank Brown. With the highlights of the group including a quintet of 1968-69 season disks that sport rubberized logos over both the front and reverse faces, included in these five (5) are examples of the; Pittsburgh Penguins, St. Louis Blues (worn reverse crest), Minnesota North Stars, Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Black Hawks (missing a chunk of front crest) which all remain in overall good condition for their age, displaying largely with just dirty/toned logos to make note of unless otherwise noted (the Converse crest of the North Stars slug is exceptionally clean) as well as oily to the touch surfaces, something that is present throughout the entirety of the collection and worth noting for accuracy. Moving on to the section of pucks that hail from the period of 1969 to 1977, all of which sport a screened on Art Ross/Converse logo on the reverse instead of a rubberized one, included are pucks of the Pittsburgh Penguins (x2 - one version "B" - no scarf and no name and one version "A" with the scarf and name in blue), Vancouver Canucks (x2), New York Rangers (x2 - one with a large gash through front face), Atlanta Flames (x2 - both with dirty logos), Detroit Red Wings (x3 - two with the white background that are dirty and a clean red background version that has minor wear to the crest on the reverse), St. Louis Blues (x2 - both version "b" with the small logo and white background), Colorado Rockies (dirty and partially worn front logo), Toronto Maple Leafs (partially worn reverse crest), Buffalo Sabres (x2 - one version "A" with "Buffalo Sabres" and one version "C" with no name on logo - both with dirty crests), New York Islanders (x2), Washington Capitals (crazing to the front crest and a partially worn reverse crest), Chicago Black Hawks (clean), Los Angeles Kings (dirty/partially worn front logo), Philadelphia Flyers (dirty front crest and a worn/melted one on the reverse), Cleveland Barons (crazing to front crest, dirty front crest, worn reverse crest and chipping to the edge) and the Montreal Canadiens (dirty front crest and partially worn reverse one). A great grouping from a bygone era of the game, don't miss out on these for your puck collection!
Publishing his first paid hockey article in a New York Rangers game program in 1970 that earned him a total of fifty ($50) dollars, from there, Frank Brown began his career as a journalist for The Associated Press, typically covering the Montreal Canadiens. Under the leadership of Stan Fischler, Brown stated he learned the "courage of my convictions" after being handed Gordie Howe's phone number. Moving on to the New York Daily News in 1980, where he would remain until 1998, when he joined the National Hockey League as a communication executive, a position he would hold with the league until his retirement in 2018. He was awarded the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2019.
