Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016

Only the second example to surface, we are elated to be able to offer a 1909 Percy LeSueur Ottawa Senators real photo postcard signed by the HOF legend. First challenging the mighty Silver Seven for Lord Stanley’s grail with the outgunned Smith Fall hockey club in 1906, LeSueur impressed his competitors enough to be offered the elite job of goaltender for the Cup champs, a position he would hold for 8 seasons. LeSueur was also an innovator, developing the early style “gauntlet” gloves used by netminders, along with one of the very first hockey nets.
Just under the standard size at 3 ½” x 5 ¼”, the RPPC features Percy in his Ottawa uniform, with his trusty built-up one-side that now resides in the HOF. The reverse has been filled out entirely in LeSueur’s hand, referencing his recent trip to New York where Ottawa played a pair of exhibition games against the rival Montreal Wanderers. The fountain pen signature is absolutely flawless, and is worthy of inclusion in the world’s greatest hockey autograph collection.
Extremely well cared for throughout the past century, the postcard displays beautifully, with heavy silvering taking place. Crisp corners and a clean surface are thankfully present, with just a tiny water stain along the bottom right corner more visible along the reverse, the only issue to note. The text all remains dark and vibrant, with nothing infringing upon the overall aesthetics. We couldn’t possibly imagine a finer signature existing from the legendary player, let alone a better vehicle for it. As we noted, this is the only the second example of LeSueur’s signature to ever be sold, as we handled the first example last fall that was recognized at that time as the only surviving example.
