Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
Originally going undrafted but signing with the Chicago Blackhawks after a single season in the NCAA with the University of Notre Dame Fighting Sioux, leading the school to its fifth (5th) National Championship and third (3rd) of the decade, Ed Belfour would make his professional debut in the IHL (International Hockey League) as a member of the Saginaw Hawks, playing with them for a year and a half before breaking into the NHL with Chicago. Going on to register 484 wins in the National Hockey League over the course of his career, offered here is this pair of pads worn by Belfour during the late-1980s, circa 1988 as a member of the IHL's Saginaw Hawks, which come directly from his personal collection. Classic tan suede and black leather offerings made by John Brown Custom Sports, "Brown" appears in white letters over the outside of each pad while fabric labels for the brand have been added over the outside upper portion of each pad plus both calf wraps. Also sporting smaller Brown logo patches over the upper part of each pad face, leather reinforcements have been added to the inside and outside of each boot channel while a team repair is present over the outer boot roll of the right pad. Retaining all their straps and buckles, with some of the stuffing on the interior of the pads broken down over time, the pads show good game-use throughout numerous puck marks throughout each as well as scuffing/fraying at the top of each pad and good pilling/red colour dye transfer to the felt on the backside of each. Additionally, the pads show some cracking/drying out to the black leather portions from age. Hailing directly from his personal collection, an LOA signed by Belfour will accompany the lot.
