Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
The Dionne quintuplets dominated the news during the height of The Great Depression, fascinating the public in the wake of their birth and the years that followed with an almost carnival-esque sideshow atmosphere surrounding the five Canadian sisters. We have a photo of the famous Dionne quintuplets with the surgeon who brought them into the world and acted as their guardian, Dr. Allan Roy Dafoe, and it’s been signed by the Order of the British Empire recipient. At 8” x 10” and on card stock, the black and white image pictures the doctor with the girls, with names listed below along with a copyright date of 1938. Dafoe has signed along the right adding a personalization, and the signature remains especially dark and bold. A stamp from N.E.A. Services graces the reverse, with just some minor toning and edge wear to the photo itself. Dafoe died on 2 June 1943 at age 60 from pneumonia and complications from cancer, and is buried at Park Lawn Cemetery in Toront
