Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
The first Major League Baseball team to reside north of the border, the Montreal Expos enjoyed 36 seasons of play in La Belle Province, producing numerous homegrown stars such as Gary Carter, Andre Dawson, Larry Walker and Pedro Martinez. Acquiring pitcher Dennis Martinez from the Baltimore Orioles in 1986, Martinez would throw the 13th perfect game in Major League history on July 28th, 1991 against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. The first non-American to hurl a perfect game, offered here is collection of memorabilia signed by Martinez. Paced by a ball signed by Dennis that includes a "7-28-91 Perfect Game" inscription over one panel, both the autograph and inscription are penned in blue ballpoint pen ink that displays beautifully despite some minor fading from age. Penned over a period correct circa 1991-92 Rawlings made "Official National League Baseball" that sports a facsimile signature of league president William White, the ball itself is also in good condition with no wear to the stamping and only light tonning seen throughout, heavier in some areas over others. Hailing directly from Expos trainer Mike Kozak and accompanied by his handwritten note plus business card, the ball also includes an additional LOA that incorrectly states that the ball is game used. For the rest of the lot, included is an Expos jersey that has been signed by Martinez that remains in overall good condition despite some glue residue over the front and is decorated with tackle twill team crests and numbers. Signed by Martinez through the "2" on the reverse with a silver marker ink signature that displays without issue, a JSA sticker is affixed underneath and is accompanied by a matching COA. Finally, the last item included is a copy of Martinez's 1989 Topps card that has been signed by him over the front with a thin blue marker ink signature that displays without issue.
