Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
Now considered hockey lore, Jacques Plante famously started wearing his practice mask in games following getting his face cut by a slap shot from the New York Ranger's Andy Bathgate, on November 1, 1959. Jake left the ice for repairs after the incident, and refused to return unless Habs coach Toe Blake permitted the injured keeper to wear his mask. Blake conceded that evening, and allowed it's use until the cut healed, but Plante insisted on it's continued use, and after a stretch of unbeaten games in the protective headwear, Blake finally approved of it's use. The rest as they say, is history. This famous image of Plante cut and bleeding with his face taped up shows the mask being donned. Retrieved from a period magazine, the approx 7" x 9" picture has been signed by Plante in blue ballpoint, with the signature displaying beautifully. Graded "Authentic Auto" by PSA/DNA, there doesn't appear to be any issues regarding the picture's condition.
