Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
With over a quarter-century of service as the NHL’s first president, Frank Calder’s legacy lives on in the Calder Memorial Trophy awarded to the league’s top rookie each season. Instrumental in the transition of the NHA to the NHL, Calder was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a builder in 1947, passing away in 1943. This lot contains a handwritten letter signed by the England native. At 8 1/2" x 11", on Calder's personal letterhead, and dated October 1, 1926, the letter is addressed to Boston Bruins owner Charles Adams, and it appears to be an apology for some transgression, with the text ending "Perhaps we're both a little on edge. Let's forget it". Calder's signature is just a tiny bit light due to a weak writing instrument, with no fading taking place whatsoever. There are a few minor ink smudges near the top along with punched holes from former binder insertion. This is an ideal candidate for framing along with a photo of Calder.
