Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
Regarded as one of the original "Flying Frenchmen", Newsy Lalonde is regarded as one of hockey's and lacrosse's greatest players of the first half of the 20th century and one of Canadian sport's most colourful characters. A Stanley Cup champion with the Montreal Canadiens 1916 and the National Hockey League's scoring champion in both 1918–19 and 1920–21, Lalonde was inducted into the hallowed halls of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1950. Offered here, we present this 1930 NHL Golf Tournament entry form/letter which was been autographed by Lalonde. Measuring out to 8 3/8" x 10 7/8" in size for its effort, the letter was sent out by the NHL to invitees for their annual golf tournament for the year 1930. Typed out on National Hockey League letterhead that lists Frank Calder as league President over the left side of the page, "N.H.L. GOLF TOURNAMENT - 1930" is found underlined in the middle of the page, which remains in overall good condition but does show a pair of fold lines from when it was placed in an envelope for mailing. Detailing in the body of the letter that the tournament was to be held at Forest Hills Golf Club in Montreal on June 9th, 1930 (a Monday), the letter also lists the entry fee as being $5.00. Listing a spot for Lalonde to reveal his handicap, which he has done so with the number "24" in crisp black fountain ink, the letter is finished with Lalonde signing his name in matching ink that is found to be in the same condition, with the example of his signature matching a similar entry form we had sold in the past for the tournament of 1928. Featuring a pair of punched holes on the left side of the sheet, the page shows light toning as well as minor edge and corner wear as well as a couple of other small penned notations or surface marks. A Classic Auctions LOA will accompany the piece.
