Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
Making his NHL debut with the New York Rangers in 1959-60, Dave Balon would be traded to Montreal in 1963 and play four seasons with the Habs as well as one with Minnesota before returning to the Blueshirts in 1968-69. From his second stint in Manhattan (1968-69 to 1971-72), we offer a stick used by Balon circa early-1970s, along with a pair of skates worn by the two-time Stanley Cup champion while with the Rangers. The stick is a Sher-Wood Custom Pro model with the original tape to the handle, and the original blade tape removed. As we could not find photos of Balon using a similar stick with the lower shaft painted black, it is likely the dark colour was added sometime after use. #17 is handwritten to the upper shaft which guarantees use with New York, as Balon wore #21 with Vancouver (1971-72 and 1972-73). Good use is shown on the vintage lumber, with marks and wear including to the underside blade, with no visible cracks or chips. The skates have "17" decals added to each boot along with after market tendon protectors, with the original laces missing. Heavy use is shown, with considerable wear and rubbing to the leather boots along with scrapes and cuts, with additional wear and surface rusting to the blades. Hailing from the personal collection of Dave Balon, a Classic Auctions LOA will accompany.
