Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
Attended by just under 15,000 at Boston Garden on Jan 19, 1971, the 24th annual NHL All-Star Game featured the West Division All-Stars battling the East Division All-Stars, with four-time All-Star Dave Balon suiting up for the East along with fellow Rangers stars Ed Giacomin, Gilles Villemure, Brad Park, Jim Neilson and Jean Ratelle. From his personal collection, we have Dave Balon's photo-matched East Division All-Stars jersey, along with a framed East Division All-Stars team photo. Gerry Cosby labeling with "46" sizing is affixed to the inside seam. Featuring a pair of embroidered NHL shield crests to both sides of the upper chest, with additional NHL shields over both shoulders, “17” is sewn to the chest, sleeves and verso in black twill with orange trim, with “Balon” placed over the nameplate on the upper reverse in matching material. Showing light wear from just a single game of use, there are pinhole sized holes over the shoulders, lower sleeves and each side of the body, most likely from the jersey at one time being displayed. An included high resolution digital image has been photo-matched to the proper placement of all the details of the jersey, specifically to the orange thread sewing patterns around the numbers where you can clearly see in the exact same spots the black areas without orange. It is also matched to the loose orange thread on the top left of the "7" on the left sleeve, with a number of threading irregularities also noticeable on various areas of the jersey. The team photo is 8" x 9 1/2" and mounted to a matte with the players listed, set in a wooden frame to full dimensions of just over 12" x 13 1/2" (no glass). An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany.
