Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
Playing for the Prince Albert Mintos in the SJHL before turning pro in 1958 and joining the New York Rangers farm system, Dave Balon was first called up to the big league by the Blueshirts for a 4-game stint in 1959-60 which included a pair of games against Toronto. Balon would then see action in 43 games with the Rangers over the next two seasons before his first full season in Manhattan which occurred in 1962-63. Dealt to Montreal in 1963-64, Balon would return to the Big Apple in 1968-69 and enjoy four full seasons which included leading the Rangers in goals in both 1969–70 and 1970–71. From his personal collection, we have a nice group of memorabilia featuring Balon's time with the New York Rangers. Included, there is a group of 4 1961-62 team photos (8" x 10") including one team-signed with Balon, Worsley, Howell, Hadfield, Hebenton, Bathgate, Spencer, Gendron, Langlois, Hampson, Cahan, Hannigan, Schinkel and a few others, a group of 39 team-issued photos of mixed players including a few of Balon from different seasons, a small group of Balon snapshots and photos including one of Bill Gadsby, two matching photos of Balon's 30th goal of the 1969-70 NHL season (5" x 7"), six additional photos all approx 8" x 10" including a few showing game action with Balon, and two colour photos of Balon with Jim Neilson in street clothes, 1962-63 (signed on the cover by Andy Bathgate), and 1968-69 Rangers Blue Books, a group of 20 late-1960s/early-1970s NHL programs including playoffs specimens for 1962 Game 3 semifinals vs Toronto, 1970 vs Boston, 1971 vs Toronto and 1971 vs Chicago, two scrapbooks with newspaper clippings including one for the 1960-61 season with an NHL program from the season inserted along with a 1960-61 NHL schedule, while the second scrapbook is for 1968-71 with artwork and details for Balon's hat trick on Feb 1, 1970 vs Pittsburgh.
