Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
Playing his junior hockey in the WHL with the Saskatoon Blades, Curtis Leschyshyn would be drafted 3rd overall by the Quebec Nordiques at the 1988 NHL Entry Draft and go on to play a total of 1033 games in the National Hockey League with the likes of Quebec, Colorado, Washington, Hartford, Carolina, Minnesota and Ottawa. Winning a Stanley Cup in 1996 as a member of the Colorado Avalanche, offered here is this Hartford Whalers jersey worn by Leschyshyn during his lone season as a member of the Whalers in 1996-97, the last year before they moved to Carolina and became the Hurricanes. Made by Starter, a size label reading "56-R" with Leschyshyn's number "7" penned to it in now washed out black marker ink is found affixed to the inner collar along with additional "Center Ice Authentic Collection" and Starter/NHL tags as well. Having had both the Starter and NHL shield logos embroidered into the reverse hem, the front of the jersey is decorated with a Whalers team crest that has been administered in a stacked tackle twill style. Accented over the sleeves and verso with Leschyshyn's number "7" in stacked tri-layer tackle twill numerals, "Leschyshyn" has been spelt out in single layer white tackle twill letters that have been sewn on over the affixed matching nameplate that is in place at the top of the reverse. Exhibiting excellent game-wear throughout the entirety of the piece and sporting a Whalers team stamp from Custom Crafted inside the reverse hem that denotes the piece as an "Official Hartford Whalers 1st Set 1996-97 Season" offering, stick marks appear over the front, reverse and both sleeves while the sleeves also show unrepaired cuts/holes, board burns and fabric pulls/pills. Also showing numerous pills/pulls throughout the body and shoulders, the interior of the jersey retains its original fight strap and displays with good pilling. With sweat staining found around the collar, the jersey has been photo-matched with Getty Image #280071 (February 13th, 1997 vs New Jersey) to the unrepaired cuts/holes near the right elbow.
