Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
Talk about keeping it in the family, this Lester Patrick Award was presented to its namesake’s grandson, Craig Patrick, in 2000. First presented in 1966 to honor the late, great hockey coach and innovator, the Lester Patrick Trophy is awarded annually “for outstanding service to hockey in the United States.” Eligible recipients include players, officials, coaches, executives, and referees. Craig’s outstanding service includes his NHL playing career and impressive legacy as general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ first two Stanley Cup championship teams in 1991 and 1992, not to mention his role as USA coach Herb Brooks’ right hand man on the Miracle on Ice 1980 Olympic gold medal champions. He is the third generation of the Patrick family to have his name inscribed on the Stanley Cup and the third generation to be enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame (in the Builder Category). Patrick spent two years as athletic director at the University of Denver (his alma mater) in 1988–1989. He was enshrined into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1996. At 11’ in height, sporting an approx weight of 8 lbs and mounted to a rectangular wooden base with sloping sides and brown felt underside, this amazing bronze statue is an accurate reproduction of the original, with the engraved plaque affixed to the wooden base stating “Lester Patrick Award”, “Craig Patrick” and “2000”. There is wear to the left side of the base at the bottom front. With the original sculpted by Princeton University professor Joe Brown, bronze hockey statues are extremely rare and valuable in any form, making this offering a rare opportunity, especially given that the recipient is the grandson of Lester Patrick.
