Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/1/2022
Entering the record books during just his second NHL season as the youngest player in history to be named as permanent team captain, Connor McDavid received the honour at the beginning of his sophomore campaign, on Oct 5, 2016, when the young superstar joined the long line of venerated players who have all proudly donned the “C” for the Edmonton Oilers including Mark Messier, Jason Smith, and of course, the one and only Wayne Gretzky. This historically important photo-matched Oilers captain’s jersey was worn by McDavid in 2016-17, specifically in six different games listed on the accompanying team LOA including Oct 30th (2-0 loss to Ottawa), Nov 27th (2-1 loss to Arizona, registered 1 assist), Nov 29th (4-2 loss to Toronto, scored 2 points including 1 goal), Dec 3rd (3-2 win over Anaheim), Dec 17th (3-2 victory over Tampa Bay) and Dec 31st (3-2 loss to Vancouver, scored 1 goal).
A label with “56” sizing is affixed to the collar, with embroidered NHL and Reebok crests over the front and reverse necklines respectively. Styled with the familiar oil drop team crest, the orange V-neck has “97” in tri-colour tackle twill sewn to the sleeves and verso, with the captain’s “C” sewn to the left breast and Rogers Place Inaugural Season Patch just above the right breast. Exhibiting marks from game-use over the front band, there is a stick mark beneath the striping bands on the left sleeve, with a few additional marks over the lower right sleeve along with a small hole. The team patch lists “Rogers Place Opening Night Oct 12, 2016 vs Calgary Flames”, but McDavid never wore this jersey in that contest. There is also a patch from MeiGray numbered “N02585”, and according to their population report, the jersey is an "Orange Set 1 w/C, w/ Rogers Place Inaugural Season Patch - Worn 10/30/2016, 11/27/16, 11/29/16, 12/17/16, 12/3/16 & 12/31/16" specimen. Getty Image #638718566 (December 31, 2016) has been matched to the black marks in the lower white stripe on the left sleeve (photo included), with four additional images matched to loose threads on various areas of the jersey from the Oct 30th (Ottawa), Nov 29th (Toronto) and Dec 17th (Tampa Bay) matches. Worn by arguably the best player in the game during his second NHL season and first to reach 100 points, please note that this lot may be subject to a silent reserve.
