Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
While the spotlight followed the towering figures like Richard, Beliveau, and Plante during the Canadiens’ golden age, there was another hometown kid playing a vital role in the background. Claude Provost was a key part of two separate Montreal dynasties through the 1950s and 60s, quietly winning nine Stanley Cups over the course of his 15-season career, all with the Canadiens. He remains the only nine-time champion not inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, a snub many believe is long overdue. Offered here is Claude Provost’s game-used CCM stick from the mid-1950s, a relic from one of the most decorated, yet often overlooked careers in Canadiens history. The stick retains its original tape jobs on both the knob and blade, with a few loose strands still clinging to the wood after decades of age. Below the knob, “Custom Made for Provost” is clearly stamped. Additional CCM stampings appear on both sides of the shaft, as was common for the era. Portions of the blue accent striping have worn away over time, and the blade shows expected age-related cracks along with visible wear at the heel’s bottom edge. Scattered puck and stick marks throughout the shaft and blade speak to its use in game action.
Additionally, also included with the stick is a custom "CCM Vintage" featuring a cut signature of Provost that has been inserted into the bottom of the "4" on the reverse. A vintage-style Montreal Canadiens jersey/sweater that feature’s high-quality customization that makes it a Claude Provost example, the jersey is done in the style of Montreal's classic red coloured uniform shirt, with brand/size "L" labeling affixed to the interior of the tie-neck collar while another label is found over the front left. Decorated over the front of the jersey with Montreal's famed "CH" team crest in stacked tri-layer felt style, a CCM logo has been embroidered into the reverse hem and the reverse has been accented with Provost's number "14" in dual layer white-over-blue felt numerals. Found to be in overall excellent condition with no flaws to mention other than a couple small fabric pulls, a vintage cut signature of Provost's measuring roughly 3/4" x 3" has been inserted into the bottom of the "4" on the reverse. A vintage signature signed by Claude in blue fountain pen ink at the time, the autograph displays well for its age despite some minor fading/oxidation that is worth mentioning for accuracy.
