Gillies teamed up with high-scoring New York Islanders teammates Bryan Trottier and Mike Bossy to give Team Canada a formidable top line for the 1981 Canada Cup. Canada rolled through the round robin portion, with a 4-4 tie against Czechoslovakia being their only blemish on a 4-0-1 record that included a decisive 7-3 win over the U.S.S.R. Canada beat the United States in the semi-final in Montreal but Gillies scored the team’s only goal in an 8-1 meltdown in the final at the Forum against the Soviets. With Gillies making room for his “Trio Grande” linemates, Trottier and Bossy each had 11 points and finished tied for second in tournament scoring with Guy Lafleur and Alexei Kasatonov, one point behind leading scorer Wayne Gretzky. This game worn white mesh Team Canada features the misspelled name “Gilles” screened onto a nameplate, indicating that it was likely used in a pre-tournament exhibition game. The jersey exhibits light wear and features a few stick marks on the sleeves. Gillies has autographed the front of the jersey with a red sharpie. The size 48 jersey features its original Sandow Sporting Knit double tag and has “SK” screened in red on the hem. It comes with Clark Gillies’ signed letter of authenticity.
