Stunning memento commemorates the New York Islanders’ historic Stanley Cup title of 1982 as the Isles became the first United States-based team to capture Lord Stanley’s silverware for three consecutive years. After a (still) franchise record 54-win, 118-point regular season, the defending champs got a scare in the opening round of the playoffs, needing an overtime goal in the deciding game of their best-of-five series with the Penguins to get past Pittsburgh. A six-game victory over their arch rivals, the Rangers, was then followed by four-game series sweeps of the Nordiques and Canucks. Playoff MVP Mike Bossy’s seven goals in the finals against Vancouver tied Jean Beliveau’s (1956) modern day record for goals in the Cup finals, while Bryan Trottier’s 32 playoff assists set a new standard. Billy Smith meanwhile, was again stellar in goal, his 15-4-0 mark equaling his own record for playoff victories. It was Bossy who had the distinction of scoring what proved to be the Cup-winning goal in New York’s 3-1 clinching victory in Vancouver, the Islanders thus earning bona fide “dynasty” status. Gold and diamond creation here was later presented to Islander legend Clark Gillies and features three large diamonds, surrounded in a sloping fashion by the words Isles’ fans never got tired of hearing; “Stanley Cup Champions.” A raised image of the team’s logo is on one shank, with “Gillies” above and Clark’s number “9” below. Appearing on the opposite side are three Stanley Cups, “Islanders” and reference to their Prince of Wales championship. Stamped on the interior of the band is “Balfour 10K”, with “FIRST AMERICAN TEAM” engraved alongside three tiny images of the Stanley Cup. In excellent condition, showing moderate wear, the size 10-1/2 ring recalls the best of times in Islander franchise history and will come with a letter of authenticity signed by Hall-of-Famer Clark Gillies.
