After sipping from Lord Stanley’s precious trophy the first time in 1980, the New York Islanders returned to the winners’ circle a year later, following a 110-point regular season that saw the fabulous “Trio Grande” line of Clark Gillies, Bryan Trottier and Mike Bossy again terrorize NHL netminders. Bossy’s 68 regular season goals were followed up by another 17 in 18 playoff games, earning him the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. After taking care of an upstart Edmonton Oilers team in the quarter-finals, the Islanders swept the Rangers in four straight, before securing their second consecutive Cup with a 4-games-to-1 victory over the Minnesota North Stars. Wayne Merrick’s goal in the 5-1 clincher at Nassau Coliseum proved to be the Cup-winning goal. The names of Long Island’s aforementioned hockey heroes are engraved on the barrel of this 13” high silver-plated memento and are joined by those of Potvin, Smith, Goring, Nystrom, Kallur, Morrow, Persson, Sutter, Tonelli and others, with coach Al Arbour and GM Bill Torrey’s names appearing above. Presented to Hall-of-Famer Clark Gillies who has autographed the green felt along the bottom of the wooden base, adding “#9” and “HHOF 02”, the trophy is in excellent condition with a somewhat “blotchy” patina. Mr. Gillies will also sign a letter of authenticity to be included with this striking keepsake.
