Hockey Memorabilia Auction - Spring 2008
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/10/2008
Firsts are always extra special and this first offering from Hall-of-Famer Clark Gillies’ remarkable collection of memorabilia and souvenirs is a fabulous way to commence our historical memorabilia auction. History was indeed made in the spring of 1980 when Clark and his teammates secured the New York Islanders’ first Stanley Cup championship, becoming the second expansion team to hoist Lord Stanley’s coveted trophy, and that in the team’s eighth season. It was an oh so memorable goal by Bob Nystrom in overtime of game six of the finals against Philadelphia that gave the Isles a 5-4 clinching victory and sent the hometown fans at Uniondale’s Nassau Coliseum into hysterics. The Islanders had reached the finals by first taking care of the L.A. Kings 3-games-to-1, beating the Bruins 4-1 and eliminating the Sabres in six games. With 12 goals and 17 assists in 21 games, Bryan Trottier was named MVP of the playoffs and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy. Linemates Gillies (6G, 10A) and Mike Bossy (10G, 13A) were also fine offensive contributors in the post-season, as were Bob Bourne (10G, 10A), Denis Potvin (6G, 13A) and Butch Goring (7G, 12A), the latter an important pickup by GM Bill Torrey a month before the playoffs got underway. Members of the championship squad received magnificent keepsakes like this, presented to left winger Clark Gillies. A significant diamond floats in a sea of blue on the front, with “Stanley Cup Champions 1980” encircling it. One shank features a raised image of hockey’s ultimate prize, with the NHL shield in the background, while the other includes crossed hockey sticks, the Islanders logo and “9 – Gillies – LW” inscribed on a banner above. Stamped “10K” on the interior of the size 11 band, the ring is in near perfect condition, showing very minor wear. From the dawning of one of hockey’s greatest dynasties, the tempting treasure was obtained directly from Clark Gillies and will be accompanied by his signed letter of authenticity. Yes indeed, extra special!
