This gorgeous blue mesh jersey was worn by Clark Gillies during the 1978-79 season, the last year he wore the captain’s “C” for the New York Islanders. The team’s top draft pick in 1974, Gillies quickly became a team leader and was a clear choice for coach Al Arbour to take over for original Islanders captain Ed Westfall during the 1976-77 season. The jersey has its original Goodman Sons size 52 and Bill Vandeburgh Company tags sewn onto the back of the neck. It exhibits wonderful use with half a dozen team repairs on the jersey and great inside piling. A red paint transfer on the shoulder offers testimony of Gillies’ rugged and determined playing style. Gillies chose to relinquish the captaincy the following season, a decision that can hardly be criticized in hindsight as new captain Denis Potvin led the Islanders to the first of its four straight Stanley Cups the following season. A treasure for Islanders, Gillies and jersey collectors, this game used sweater comes with his signed letter of authenticity.
