Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
The most important signature in any advanced hockey collection, Lord Frederick Arthur Stanley served as Governor General of Canada from 1888 to 1893, at which time he famously donated the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup – later to be known as the Stanley Cup. Offered here, we present thissignature cut signed as "Stanley" from the legendary politician. More desirable than the "Derby" signatures that occasionally surface which were penned after Lord Stanley's accession as the 16th Earl of Derby, the word "Lord" appears alongside the "Stanley" portion of the autograph but we are unsure if this was signed by the Stanley Cup namesake himself or by someone else after the fact. Measuring out to 1" x 1 3/8" and glued on to a piece of paper measuring 1 1/8" x 1 3/4" for its effort, the signature displays beautifully and remains strong and legible despite its age while the paper its signed on plus the paper it is glued too shows some staining/foxing that is worth mentioning for accuracy. Also including a pair of correspondence letters that are penned in black fountain pen ink on either "House of Commons" or "11 Downing Street - Whitehall", the first of the two (2) is dated with what appears to be March 15th, 1881 while the other is possibly dated July 10th, 1878 and is marked "Private" at the top of the page in matching ink. Both made out to Stanley and appearing in overall good condition with expected wear including fold lines, the pages both measure out to roughly 4 1/2" x 7 3/8".
