Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
Taking place at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, the 2011 Winter Classic had the Penguins hosting the Washington Capitals, with each team playing in retro-style jerseys. This Pittsburgh Penguins 2011 Winter Classic jersey was worn by forward Chris Kunitz during the first period. A size 56 flag tag hangs in the back of the tie-neck collar. Embroidered NHL and Reebok patches are on the front and back necklines. Styled with attractive dual-colour drop shadow numbers and name-on-nameplate, the garment also sports the 2011 Winter Classic crest over the right breast. The sweater pays proper homage to the Pens inaugural season in 1967-68 with a gorgeous felt team crest that pictures the team’s early logo that displayed a plumper skating penguin with a scarf around its neck. With no visible game-use, the jersey remains in beautiful condition and is ideal for display. The Penguins team patch remains affixed to the inside hem, and a MeiGray patch with registry No. H05954 has also been placed just above the hem. According to the MeiGray population report, this garment is a “Navy Retro Winter Classic Period 1” and it was worn by Kunitz in the game’s first period and comes with a MeiGray LOA. Also included is a 2011 Winter Classic Penguins practice jersey with Reebok size 56 tagging. Featuring the same gorgeous felt crest on the front as the one on Kunitz’s game-worn jersey, it has the 2011 Winter Classic patch on the right breast and the Penguins team patch sewn inside the rear tail, and the fight strap has equipment manager Dana Heinze’s blue marker signature inside the fold.
