Beep! Beep! The Road Runner was impossible to keep up with in the spring of 1973. Yvan Cournoyer won the Conn Smythe Trophy, scoring an NHL playoff record 15 goals to lead the Canadiens to the Stanley Cup. Cournoyer’s Sher-Wood game-used stick is originally from longtime Habs trainer Eddy Palchak's personal collection and attributed to the last game of the 1973 final. Yvan’s record-breaking 15th goal was the Cup winner in Montreal’s 6-4 win over the Blackhawks in Game 6 at Chicago Stadium on May 10, 1973. “12 Cournoyer Y.” is stamped on the shaft and his original tape jobs remain on the blade and custom-shaved knob. An “Apr. 1973” production date stamp sits low on the back of the shaft.
Black marker annotation referencing Cournoyer’s record on the back of the shaft reads “15e But Coupe Stanley Record de Buts Contre Chicago 15/05/73 CH Gagne la Coupe”, which translates to “15th Goal Stanley Cup Goals Record Against Chicago 15/05/73 CH Wins the Cup”. The date of Game 6 was May 10, 1973 so the inscribed date of May 15 may be a mistake related to it being Cournoyer’s 15th goal of the playoffs.
