Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018

One of the game’s truly saddest days, those in attendance at MSG for the April 18th contest in 1999 between the New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins witnessed something truly special and historic, as Wayne Gretzky played the final game of his illustrious, groundbreaking career. We have a wonderful and important memento from that somber setting, with a stick used by The Great One that was signed, dedicated and gifted to none other than former teammate Paul Coffey’s son. A Hespeler CS Pro model with “Gretzky” over the upper shaft, the stick retains the original black tape over the blade and Gripper over the knob, with “99” burned into the blade stem (as on all his last game sticks) and “1487” handwritten on the top of the knob (Wayne’s NHL game total). Approximately 40 sticks were branded with the "99" to be used in that final hurrah, with this blade stem signed “To Blake, Your Friend Wayne Gretzky”, along with the date of “4/18/99”. Gretzky ended his career with a final point, assisting on the lone Rangers goal scored by Brian Leetch. A signed LOA from Paul Coffey will accompany this wonderful specimen.
A few marks are visible over the taped section of blade, with a few additional dark marks noticeable over the toe section. The top of the knob is partially blacked-out. The upper back of the shaft has "5R/260" and "1/260" factory coding stamped in white. There is also some glue residue at the blade joint, with the stick in otherwise gorgeous condition, an absolute prize for display.
