Still lamented throughout the province of Quebec and especially painful to the citizens of Montreal, the suspension of Maurice Richard by NHL President Clarence Campbell in 1955 most likely cost the superstar his only scoring title, with the Habs also losing the Stanley Cup that spring in 7 games. Occurring in a March 13th contest vs the Bruins, Richard hit a linesman after an altercation, with Campbell banning play for The Rocket for the final three games of the season as well as the playoffs. Hailing from that infamous season we have what may be considered as the one of the greatest documents from Richard’s career, with his Standard Player’s Contract for the 1954-55 NHL season – signed by the hero Richard, the antagonist Campbell and Canadiens Vice-President William Northey. At the standard 8 ½” x 15” and calling for a salary of $12,000.00 (approx. $112,612.19 in 2018 dollars), no bonuses are listed, with a stamp present from the Central Registry. With each executed in ballpoint, all three signatures display wonderfully, with some minor encroachment to the Richard signature from the Northey example.
Exhibiting just light toning along with a pair of punched holes from former binder insertion, there’s also a pair of fold lines, a small edge tear, and a few wrinkles/creases at corners. Despite these small technical faults, the contract remains in especially pleasing condition, and would display brilliantly framed.
