Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/7/2017
Shortly after the gut-wrenching events of the Sept 11th terror attacks on New York City, the boys from Madison Avenue honoured their fallen Big Apple brethren with commemorative 9/11 patches worn on their jerseys during the 2001-02 NHL season. We have a New York Rangers captain’s jersey from that very season, with this example worn by the most important of Blue Shirts, Mark Messier. The captain was in his second tour with the club when this jersey was donned, and he’ll forever be remembered for bringing Lord Stanley’s grail back to the MSG hopefuls in 1994. Size tagging sits affixed to the collar, with NHL and KOHO crests over the bottom hem and back necklines respectively. “Rangers” appears diagonally across the chest in dual-colour drop-shadow tackle twill letters, with sleeve and verso numbers in matching material. The “Blue Set 2” tie-neck also sports the important 9/11 crest over the left shoulder. Patches from both the Rangers and MeiGray have been affixed to the inside hem, with a matching team LOA to accompany along with a COR from MeiGray.
Game-wear is light but definite on the desirable garment, with a few small marks over the lower front band, along with faint board burns over the right sleeve.
