Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018

Mario Lemieux was at the top of his game when he wore this scarce photo-matched 1988-89 Pittsburgh Penguins pre-season jersey. Fresh from a 168-point campaign, Mario le Magnifique was on the verge of his most productive season, which saw him post career highs in goals (85), assists (114) and points (199) to win the Art Ross Trophy. Lemieux’s No. 66 jersey is an Ultrafil affair with lettering done with the 1987-88 style and an embroidered CCM logo on the right rear hem. It is photo-matched to a 1988-89 pre-season game at the Montreal Forum by Getty Images #73427207 to a pair of marks on the lower portion of the first "6" of "66" on the left shoulder, as well as to a number of the black marks below it. Skating Penguin logo, captain’s “C” on the left breast, numbers on back and both sleeves, and surname letters on the nameplate are all heat-screened.
More game wear shows in black marks on the right sleeve. The Ultrafil fly tag in the collar is sewn over by nameplate stitching. The yellow vinyl of the number “66” on the back has let go from its adhesive in portions, particularly the second “6” on the right, but both remain whole with no vinyl loss.
