Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
An extraordinary piece of game used memorabilia, we have a signed official Spalding NHL puck that, as legend has it, was used by New York Rangers HOFer Ching Johnson to score a goal in the 1931 Stanley Cup playoffs! Although the story cannot be confirmed (Johnson did score against the Maroons in the opening round of the ‘31 playoffs), the puck itself is highly desirable, with company logos over the obverse and reverse along with a stamped example over the side with “Official”. Johnson has signed just above the logo on one side in white, with “NY Rangers” and “1931” written below. The signature and inscription are quite faded, as are the Spalding logos. Locating a game-used puck autographed by an original Ranger is a rare occurrence, with this example verified by JSA, with an LOA to accompany from the respected authenticators.
As mentioned, both Spalding logos are faded, with the example near the Johnson signature especially compromised. There is also surface wear, crazing and chipping, with numerous surface lines and edge cuts/gouges. We should also note some additional writing in white on the reverse that’s currently impossible to decipher.
