Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/21/2017
Weighing in at well over six pounds, this hefty piece of vintage soapstone Inuit art has been handcrafted into the shape of a two-headed winged animal. The award, presented to Badger Bob Johnson as head coach of Team USA, was a gift from Alan Eagleson and the organizers of the 1981 Canada Cup Tournament. A small golden plaque at the base reads " Coupe Canada Cup 1981" and the underside is engraved with the signature of the artist. In very presentable condition despite a small area of chipping at one end. Wayne Gretzky, Pelle Lindbergh and all others who participated in the high end international tournament received a similar, but unique, carving for their efforts. Obtained in an estate sale of personal items that had been saved by Bob Johnson and will come with a letter of provenance.
