Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2017

A unique and very scarce/desirable issue are these coasters which pay tribute to the 1931-32 Stanley Cup champion Toronto Maple Leafs and which were available from O'Keefe's Beverages Limited. With the texture of a blotter and indeed referred to as blotters by some, the sensational sketches included are the work of cartoon artist Lou Skuce and feature a splendid Hall of Fame lineup. The numbers match the players’ uniform numbers and four examples here are second-to-none on their respective lines on the PSA Population Report, led by 10-Joe Primeau (Pop 2) at EX 5 and 8-Harold Cotton (Pop 1) at VG-EX+ 4.5. Other chart-toppers at Good 2 are 1-Lorne Chabot (Pop 1) and 14-Bob Gracie (Pop 3). Ace Bailey is slabbed VG 3, while five come in at Good 2; 2-Red Horner, 3-Alex Levinsky, 4-Hap Day, 7-King Clancy and 11-Busher Jackson. At FR 1.5 are 9-Charlie Conacher and 12-Frank Finnigan, with 5-Andy Blair at PR 1. Tape repair on the reverse, to hold the far left tip in place, resulted in 16-Harold Darragh and 18-Fred Robertson being labelled “Authentic – Altered”. Previously documented as a set of 20, it is now reported/accepted that 16 were officially produced, with a Benny Grant coaster required for this ensemble to be complete. Fascinating, informative and entertaining are these relics, with "O'Keefe's Big 4" on the backs being the name of the line of soft drinks with which the coasters were available. They measure 5-1/4" from tip to tip and rarely turn up in such quantity. Cheers to the ’31-32 Maple Leafs!
