Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
Appointed as deputy minister of the Canadian government's new Department of Labour in 1900 after serving as editor of the federal government's 'Labour Gazette' publication earlier that year, future prime minister Mackenzie King suffered a great loss while deputy minister when his roommate and best friend Henry Albert Harper died in a tragic drowning accident in 1901. As a tribute to his friend, King helped facilitate the erection of the Sir Galahad statue on Parliament Hill in 1905 in Harper's honour, while also publishing a memoir of Harper entitled The Secret of Heroism. From this era in the 10th prime minister's life, we offer a letter from 1906 handwritten by King. A simple fold-over affair on 'Caledonian Railway Company Prince Street Station Hotel Edinburgh" embossed letterhead at 4 1/2" x 7" when folded, the antique correspondence has handwritten black ink text on three pages, with King signing at the bottom of the final page of text, adding "Yours Very Truly". The text and signature remain dark, with a horizontal fold line to the letter, along with paper/glue reside on the reverse page from prior scrapbook insertion (this is not a page with any handwritten text). An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany this historic document.
