Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
Enjoying a junior hockey career with the Ontario Hockey Assocation's Peterborough Petes, Bryan Watson would go on to a professional hockey career that would see him play a total of sixteen (16) seasons in the National Hockey League where he would suit up for the likes of the Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings, Oakland Seals, Pittsburgh Penguins, St. Louis Blues and Washington Capitals. Also having played in the WHA with the Cincinnati Stingers, offered here is this Penguins jersey worn by Watson during the 1971-72 season. A heavyweight durene knit offering made by Wilson, the tattered remains of a Wilson tag remain affixed to the inner collar of the classic tie-neck style garment, which measures out to roughly a size "50" for its effort. Decorated over the front with a familiar looking Penguins team crest that features embroidered details throughout its entirety, this jersey, like all the others worn from this set, at the start of the season this jersey had the Penguins circular crest over the front, which was stripped off and replaced by the team with the current one for Pittsburgh's contest on New Year's Eve of 1971 against the Buffalo Sabres. Styled over the sleeves and verso with Watson's number "5" in dual layer whte-over-navy tackle twill numerals. Retaining a crudely sewn in loop style fight strap on the interior of the piece, the jersey, which has never had a nameplate applied over the upper reverse, displays with excellent game-wear including team repairs over the front, reverse and right sleeve as well as stick marks and board burns over both sleeves, stick marks over the front, pilling over both sleeves and the front hem, spot staining throughout, sweat staining around the collar and pilling on the interior, the jersey comes accompanied by a MeiGray LOA and COR.
