Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
The first American-born player to be awarded the prestigious Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP for his dominant performance during the New York Rangers' 1994 Stanley Cup championship, Brian Leetch scored an amazing 34 points in just 23 games, ranking him second all-time for most playoff points in a season by a blueliner! A steal at 9th overall, selected by the Rangers at the 1986 NHL Entry Draft, Leetch would play in parts of 17 seasons in Manhattan, and would become one of the most beloved players by Big Apple fans during his tenure. The five-time NHL All-Star and 1,200+ game veteran holds a number of Blueshirts' franchise records both regular season and playoffs, including most goals and points by a defenseman during the regular season and most overall assists, as well as most career playoff assists and points during the playoffs. Proudly receiving his proper enshrinement in the Hall of Fame as a true modern legend in 2009, we are especially pleased to offer a photo-matched Rangers jersey worn by Leetch during the 1989-90 NHL season.
A heavyweight mesh construction produced by CCM, a brand label is affixed to the inner collar below a sewn-in Gerry Cosby tag, with the important garment measuring-out to roughly a size 52. There is a CCM logo embroidered into the reverse hem, with "Rangers" diagonally placed down the chest in dual layer, blue-over-red, individual drop-shadow tackle twill letters. "2" is sewn to the sleeves and verso in matching material, with "Leetch" affixed directly to the upper reverse. The dual-clasp fight strap is intact, and it shows signs of repeated washings, fraying to the sides and slight salting to the clasps. Also worth noting, the jersey is from the very last year that the Rangers would use old school straight smaller letters on the jersey’s reverse for the players name, making it extremely desirable for anyone who collects Leetch or period New York Rangers jerseys.
Game-use includes, first, on the FRONT; a few puck and stick marks on the front hem including a larger stick mark overlapping the "S" of "RANGERS", with a single visible burn mark just above the front band. REVERSE; there are a few dark marks on the upper left, and stick marks on the lower left, with a few additional marks on the reverse hem including over the embroidered CCM logo. LEFT SLEEVE; a number of large stick marks are present, as well as a burn mark to the lower sleeve, a small speck of blue paint transfer between the bottom blue and red striping bands, pilling to the cuff, and a team repair on the lower blue striping band near the elbow. RIGHT SLEEVE; littered with numerous stick marks, there are also small blue and red paint transfer marks, and pilling to the cuff. SHOULDERS; a few dark marks are visible on the left shoulder. INTERIOR; pilling is present beneath the fight strap and on the left sleeve.
Regarding the photo-match, Getty Image #52286142 (Feb 7, 1990 vs Edmonton, won by New York 5-2) clearly shows the large stick mark at the bottom of the "S" of "RANGERS" over the front, with the black streak directly to the left of the elbow seam between the red and bottom blue striping band on the left sleeve also visible. This stick mark on the front can also be seen in various games throughout the season.
