Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
Originally produced for the big bad Boston Bruins in the early-1940s and first worn in exhibition as well as other games, we have an attractive number “22” Bruins sweater that was later recycled circa 1947-48 for use by Wallace "Wally" Lloyd Wilson, who just happened to be the first player in Beantown history to don the number 22 during the regular season. The sweater is now being “recycled” once again, this time, as an extremely rare and cherished relic paramount to the history of Boston hockey.
A Horace & Partridge of Boston label is affixed to the inside seam, along with a label from possibly a former owner. Styled with “22” in large gold numbers on both the front and verso, large “B” crests also grace each upper sleeve, with these examples updated at some point and not original to the garment. Black and gold striping accents have also been utilized, with bands across the shoulders, sleeves and lower front on this attractive cream-coloured wool. Void of any unsightly marks or blemishes, original Bruins' team repairs are plentiful, with a baker’s dozen present including on the front, reverse and over the right cuff.
As astute wool collectors are surely aware, high quality examples from early in the Original Six era are extremely difficult to locate, making the offered sweater a highly sought-after specimen. An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany, along with a modern print of a 1940s Bruins team photo as well as additional information featuring Wally Wilson.
