Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
After winning a Stanley Cup championship in one of the most famous finals in hockey history which also served as the latest hoorah for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Bobby Baun was selected by the Oakland Seals in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft, and played 67 games for the inaugural season team. Wishing to play for an Original Six club, "Boomer" asked to be traded after the 1967-68 season which was granted, landing him in Detroit. After parts of three seasons in Motor City, Baun found himself at odds with Wings coach Ned Harkness, and was placed on waivers before being claimed by Buffalo, who in turn sold the aging star to St Louis.
This photo-matched Detroit Red Wings jersey was worn by Baun during the 1968-69 NHL season and was later recycled for Bill Gadsby's use in NHL alumni games. Olympic tagging is affixed to the collar with a "48" size tag. Featuring one of the most attractive and classic team crests in all of sports, the embroidered winged wheel dominates the upper chest, with single white twill 4's to the sleeves and verso, with "Gadsby" to the nameplate over the upper reverse in matching material. Nice game-use is shown with a few dark marks over the front, wear to the material in spots and fabric pulls, with some pilling to the interior. Team repairs are present, testament to prolonged use, with examples situated over the front (4), reverse (2), shoulders (1) and sleeves (6). There is also some loose threading to the nameplate. An included numeric image from the March 27, 1969 match vs Toronto where Baun assisted on a Frank Mahovlich goal has been matched to the mark on the #4 on the left sleeve, with other details and placements on the jersey matching up.
Worn by the hero of the 1964 Stanley Cup championship, who legendarily scored an overtime winner on a fractured ankle in Game 6 to keep the Leafs in Cup contention, and then later donned by a Hall of Famer to proudly wear in alumni games, this vintage Red Wings durene treasure's history is almost as prized as it's timeless display value.
