Selected to his first of four All-Star Game appearances in 1976-77, Bob Gainey would help his nation win the 1976 Canada Cup before leading the Habs to their second of four-consecutive Stanley Cup championships, in 1977. This Prince of Wales trophy was presented to Gainey for the Canadiens’ status as the 1977 Wales Conference regular season champions. At 13” in height, four silver-plated hockey sticks rise up from a 2 ½” wooden base to support a cup with an affixed coat of arms and removable lid. A plaque affixed over the front of the wooden base states, “Prince of Wales Trophy”, with “Robert Gainey” engraved beneath, with a second plaque over the reverse sporting, "NHL Champions – Montreal Canadiens – 1976-77". Hailing from his personal collection, a signed LOA from Bob Gainey will accompany.
There is some even tarnishing throughout and wear to the surface in spots, with a blemish over “Robert Gainey” on the front plaque. There is also a bit of spotting in areas including beneath the rim, with a pair of very small holes visible over the floral motif just above the POW coat of arms, with this possibly an original production flaw. We should note that the finial atop the lid remains in wonderful condition, with these usually somewhat bent.
