A great little collection of Toronto Maple Leafs items including examples featuring tragic hero Bill Barilko are presented. We have a Requisition for Cheque Payment made out to Barilko, signed by Hap Day and encapsulated by PSA/DNA as NM-MT 8, along with an original Turofsky photo of the legend followed by a vintage Gerry Cosby Maple Leafs jersey with Bill’s “5” on the reverse. Next, we have 8 programs that each feature Barilko either on the cover, in the line-up, or both, including an example from 1945-46 for the Hollywood Wolves of the PCHL with Barilko in the line-up. Rounding out the lot, we have 4 copies of The Hockey News, 3 from 1951 and a single example from 1962, each featuring the Timmins native, along with a scrapbook with images of the 1951 Cup hero.
The Requisition for Cheque Payment is dated Feb 7th 1947 and is for $2000.00 for “Signing Pro Contract”. The Day signature is gorgeous, with the slip encapsulated NM-MT 8 by PSA/DNA. The Turofsky photo is 6 ½” x 8 ½” and stamped on the reverse, with light to moderate wear. Next, the Cosby Leafs jersey features a wonderful felt team crest, with “5” in felt on the reverse, and it remains in beautiful condition. The programs include 1946-47, 1950-51 and 1951-52?? examples with Barilko in the line-up, along with on the cover (1951-52), with a program without the center line-up from 1948-49 with a Barilko cover. We also have a 1951-52 program featuring an article about Barilko, with an example from 1950-51 with the star in the line-up, signed by Kennedy, Rollins, Watson and Klukay. There is also a 1962 Semi-Finals Game 7 program with an article featuring Barilko. Most of the programs exhibits issues, with creasing, tears, clear tape and loose center line-ups, with a few also sporting detached covers. Each copy of The Hockey News shows expected wear, with the scrapbook in very good condition, with a number of interesting clippings present.
