Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
An Armenian genocide survivor, Yousuf Karsh migrated to Canada and became one of the greatest portrait photographers of the 20th century. Karsh, who died in 2002, has dedicated “To: Jennifer Harper” his autograph on the first page inside the cover of his large 1968 “Karsh: men who make our world” softcover book. The legendary photographer’s signature and handwritten dedication were penned in black fountain pen ink to the left of, “men who make our world, and exhibition of photographs at The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, January 26 to March 3, 1968.” The catalogue lists the portrait subjects whose photos are part of the exhibition, and the book includes Karsh’s sensational black and white photos of Glenn Gould, Ernest Hemingway, Marc Chagall, Alberto Giacometti, Joan Miro, Georgia O’Keefe, Hellen Keller and Marcel Marceau on glossy stock, along with portraits of Jean-Paul Riopelle and Ben Shahn on either side of the back cover. The centerfold catalogue page is detached from its staples and the cover has creases and displays handling, as do the interior pages.
