Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/4/2014
This bronze sculpture on a wooden base is a memento that members of the NHL All-Star team and representatives received for taking part in the 1979 Challenge Cup that featured the Soviets as the opposition. The faceless hockey player and wooden base combine for a height of just under 8” while engraved on the metal plaque is “Challenge Cup 1979 – NHL-USSR-NHLPA.” The sculpture remains in excellent condition while the wooden base has some wear and scuffing and the plaque shows light surface scratching. Appealing piece from Hockey Canada's Andre Boudrias will be accompanied by his signed letter of authenticity.
Boudrias has also signed the bottom of the base in large and clear black marker. The Russians claimed the one and only Challenge Cup, winning games two (5-4) and three (6-0) of the series after the NHL stars had won the opener 4-2. The games were played at New York’s Madison Square Garden in February of ’79 and which replaced the annual NHL All-Star Game.
