Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
One of only seven men throughout a century of NHL hockey to eclipse the insurmountable 700-goal plateau and just the third in the league's history to surpass the mark of 800, Alexander Ovechkin has proven himself as one of the game’s all-time greatest, with HOF enshrinement guaranteed. Staring down the barrel towards the NHL's all-time goal scoring record currently held by Wayne Gretzky and the practical owner of the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy that is awarded at seasons end to the man with the most goals during the season, Ovi has won it nine (9) times, including a run of four (4) straight between 2012-13 and 2015-16. A Stanley Cup champion with the Washington Capitals in 2018, a playoffs in which he also captured the Conn Smythe Trophy, Ovi has also secured a trio of Hart Memorial Trophy's and an Art Ross Trophy, offered here is this Washington Capitals jersey worn by Ovechkin for a pair of contests during the 2016-17 season, including on January 7th on the road against the Ottawa Senators and on the night of January 9th in which he scored his 544th career goal to put him in a tie with Maurice Richard for 29th place on the National Hockey League's all-time goal scorers list, the namesake of the trophy that Ovechkin has added to his awards cabinet time and time again.
Made by Reebok and sporting a lone size "58" label affixed to the inner collar, the front and reverse necklines have been accented with the crests of both the NHL and Reebok respectively. Decorated over the front of the jersey with a Capitals team crest that has had "Washington Capitals" and a trio of red stars embroidered into it, the distinguished captain's "C" is in place over the left breast and matching alternate logo crests rest atop of both shoulders. Styled over the sleeves and verso with Ovi's familiar number "8" in dual layer red-over-navy tackle twill numerals, "Ovechkin" is spelt out in matching style letters across the affixed matching nameplate at the top of the reverse. Displaying with a trio of fight straps on the interior, two (2) of which have been sewn into the sides by Capitals equipment staff, the jersey displays just light game-wear via light stick marks over the left elbow with additional ones seen near the right cuff as well. Additionally, a small mark appears behind the right shoulder on the reverse and the sleeves have been taken in to Ovechkin's liking. Sporting the NHL's 100th anniversary patch over the right sleeve and having had a MeiGray tag numbered "N05772" sewn inside the reverse hem, according to the company's Population Report, the jersey is a "White Set 2 w/C, w/NHL Centennial Patch - Worn 1/7/17 and 1/9/17" example and is accompanied by a matching MeiGray LOA.
Regarding the photo-match the jersey is matched with Getty Image #631359266 (January 9th, 2017 vs Montreal) to the bit of black thread extending up through the top of the NHL crest at the base of the collar as well as to the fold lines below the right shoulder, to the hole patterns below the "C" plus beginning of the "A" in the Capitals crest and to the hole pattern directly to the right of the "8" on the right sleeve. A copy of the match on MeiGray stationary will accompany the piece and the LOA.
