Finishing 3rd in the Atlantic Division at the close of the 1997-98 NHL season, the Washington Capitals defeated Boston, Ottawa and Buffalo in the postseason to advance to the Stanley Cup finals vs Detroit. HOFer Adam Oates scored an impressive 17 points in 21 games for the Caps that playoff season, including a goal in Game 2 of the finals. This Prince of Wales trophy was presented to Adam Oates for the Capitals’ status as the 1997-98 Eastern Conference playoffs champions. At 13” in height, four silver-plated hockey sticks rise up from a 2 ½” wooden base to support a cup with an affixed coat of arms and removable lid. A plaque affixed over the front of the wooden base states, “Prince of Wales Trophy”, with “Adam Oates” engraved beneath, while a second plaque over the reverse sports, "NHL Champions – Washington Capitals – 1997-98". The brown felt underside is intact, with a sticker from maker Boffey affixed. Regarding condition, there is an even coat of tarnish throughout, along with a few scratches visible.
