Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
Born in Scotland in 1815 and immigrating to Kingston in what was then Upper Canada, Sir John Alexander Macdonald was first elected to the legislature of the Province of Canada in 1844, serving as the colony’s premier by 1857. With a lack of governing stability at the time, the Great Coalition was formed by Macdonald in 1864 with George Brown, resulting in the British North America Act and Canada’s birth as a nation. Macdonald would serve as the country's first Prime Minister, entering into office during Confederacy on July 1st 1867, serving from 1867–1873 and from 1878–1891. This oversized document has been signed by Macdonald. At 21" x 28 1/2" and featuring wonderful period aesthetics including gracefully handwritten text, the document dated Nov, 30, 1854 is an agreement by the government representing the British crown to sell a number of acres of land from the Sarnia Indian Reservation in Ontario to the Great Western Railway Company. Macdonald has signed over the left side in fountain pen while serving as Attorney General for the Province of Canada (1854–1862, 1864–1867), and the signature displays beautifully with no issues to note. Other signers include Andrew Russell, civil servant, who was then the Assistant Commissioner of Crown Lands. The document is folded into nine sections, and it is in fair condition and quite fragile, with tears, paper loss and tape used in spots on the reverse to repair tears. Signed by Canada's first Prime Minister, the valuable artifact is worthy of professional restoration. A Classic Auctions LOA will accompany this historic piece.
