Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
Speculating on what might have been had Parkhurst, the venerable Canadian card manufacturer, been active during Bobby Orr's rookie card season, offered here is this near-complete set of the 1995-96 Parkhurst Retro hockey card set that includes 148 of the 150 cards found in the checklist, with 139 of the cards being single or dual-signed examples. Missing cards #149 and #150 to be a complete set, it should be mentioned that the group includes duplicates of card #135 (x2- one signed by Gump Worsley and one signed by Bobby Hull), #137 (x2 - one signed by Ted Harris and one signed by Rogatien Vachon) and #146 (x2 - one signed by Frank Mahovlich and one signed by Dave Keon). Using period correct photos and a design element consistent with the time, it is also worth noting that card #7 of Bobby Orr has been signed by the Bruins legend with a dedicated signature. With the only unsigned cards found throughout the group including the likes of 8-Woytowich, 11-Williams, 56-Crozier, 61-Provost, 67-JC Tremblay, 84-Hillman, 103-Horton, 118-Gamble and 120-Sawchuk due to the fact that they had past away before the set was released, the group includes the signed offerings of HOFers/Deceased HOFers; John Bucyk, Bobby Orr, Bernie Parent, Gerry Cheevers, Bobby Hull (D. 2023), Stan Mikita (D. 2018), Glenn Hall, Pierre Pilote (D. 2017), Phil Esposito, Bill Hay, Gordie Howe (D. 2016), Norm Ullman, Andy Bathgate (D. 2016), Leo Boivin (D. 2021), Alex Delvecchio, Henri Richard (D. 2020), Yvan Cournoyer, Jacques Laperriere, Jean Beliveau (D. 2014), Serge Savard, Rogie Vachon, Gump Worsley (D. 2007), Dick Duff, Rod Gilbert (D. 2021), Harry Howell (D. 2019), Boom Boom Geoffrion (D. 2006), Jean Rattelle, Eddie Giacomin, Dave Keon, Frank Mahovlich, Marcel Pronovost (D. 2015), Red Kelly (D. 2019), Allan Stanley (D. 2013), Bob Pulford, George Armstrong (D. 2021) and Johnny Bower (D. 2017). All signed in a mix of black and blue marker and black ballpoint pen ink signatures, all the autographs largely display without issue while a couple show some minor fading or smudging. For the cards themselves, the condition is generally pleasing with light corner and edge wear seen throughout the group.
Of note, none of the signed cards were issued by the company and were then pulled from packs. All the cards were signed at various events and shows. While we did spot check a good number of the signatures, it is impossible to verify each one and therefore this lot is being offered "AS IS" with no returns able to be accepted.
