Not long after helping the New York Islanders to their second straight Stanley Cup title the previous spring, the team’s potent “Trio Grande” line of Bryan Trottier, Mike Bossy and Clark Gillies was a natural to be invited to represent Canada in the 1981 Canada Cup tournament. In one of the most competitive international events ever, the boys did their part, with Bossy and Trottier finishing second only to Wayne Gretzky atop the tourney’s scoring list with 11 points each, and Gillies contributing two goals and five assists in Canada’s seven games. After a successful round-robin and a 4-1 semi-final victory over the U.S., Canada’s marksmen were frustrated by Vladislav Tretiak and the Russians in the one-game final, the Soviets spoiling the party with an 8-1 victory. For their off-season efforts, members of Team Canada received gold rings like this one, presented to Gillies. Featuring a half maple leaf logo on the front with an arched “Coupe Canada Cup” above and four diamonds below, the size 9 ring includes “19” on one side and “81” on the other. Stamped “10K” on the inside of the band, the splendid souvenir is in excellent condition, exhibiting moderate wear. Another fine piece from Clark Gillies’ international hockey experience, it will be accompanied by his signed letter of authenticity.
