Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
Released during a time that would see the New York Islanders win a total of three (3) out of their four (4) straight Stanley Cups and go to five Stanley Cup Finals before the changing of the guard would happen to Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers, offered here is this collection of graded O-Pee-Chee hockey cards totalling eleven (11) that dates from 1980-81 to 1984-85. Featuring a mix of slabs from companies such as PSA, BVG and CSG, the group sees its entirety displaying grades of NM 7 or better after their respective inspections by the evaluators. Paced in terms of age by 1980-81 OPC examples of Mike Gartner's Capitals Scoring Leaders/Team Checklist card that sports a mark of PSA MINT 9 as well as the cardboard of Denis Potvin (PSA NM-MT 8) and Rob Ramage (RC - PSA NM 7), Gartner appears once again over the front of his 1981-82 OPC card, #347 in the set, with this one also displaying a MINT 9 designation from PSA. Featuring a pair of 1982-83 set specimens in the form of Tony Esposito and Gilbert Perreault that have been graded by BVG and CSG respectively, both have earned grades of GEM MINT 9.5 with the Esposito also displaying subgrades of Centering 9, Corners 9.5, Edges 9.5 and Surface 9.5 at the bottom of its label that is seen at the top of the holder. For the remaining five (5) cards, all from O-Pee-Chee's 1984-85 release and having been slabbed by PSA, the group includes rookie offerings of HOFers Doug Gilmour (NM-MT 8) and Chris Chelios (NM-MT 8) with Pat Verbeek's first-year card also being present and coming in a tad better with a mark of MINT 9. For the final two cards of the 1984-85's, veterans Denis Potvin and Joey Mullen are featured with their cards having been assessed grades of MINT 9 and GEM MT 10 to close out the collection of a "perfect" note.
