Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
Perhaps the most famous hockey card set of all-time, cards from O-Pee-Chee’s 1979-80 release came in wax packs that contained 14 cards and cost young ones 20 cents, with the rookie cards of a young phenom by the name of Wayne Gretzky coveted by all by seasons end. Featuring beautiful colours and pleasing centering with sharp corners all the way around as well as clean surfaces and the rough cut edges that commonly plagues O-Pee-Chee cards of the era, this copy of card #18 picturing Wayne Gretzky has been deemed worthy of Beckett's NM-MT+ 8.5 after their inspection of the treasured cardboard. Also including a graded copy of the Oilers team checklist card that has been assessed a NEAR MINT+ 7.5 designation, both of the Beckett holders the cards are housed in remain in excellent condition with just a couple of very small and light scratches worth pointing out and mentioning for accuracy. For the remaining 394 cards making up the rest of the offered complete assembly, most of them appear to be in a nice uniform condition consisting of EX, EX-MT and NM examples while a few lower-grade specimens are featured throughout as well. For the notables, the cardboard of 150-Dryden, 160-Dionne, 175-Howe, 185-Hull, 200-Lafleur and 230-Bossy all fall into the grade categories listed above while showing mostly just light wear to their corners and edges, heaviest on the examples of Hull and Lafleur. Additionally, the three (3) main series checklist cards all present in the same condition neighbourhoods as their notable counterparts and remain in an umarked state along with the team checklist cards as well. A satisfying offering that should please our lucky winning bidder upon its arrival.
